The Basics of Puppy Nutrition

Feeding a growing puppy requires more than just picking a bag of kibble off the shelf. Puppies need a specific balance of protein, fats, and minerals like calcium to support their rapid bone and muscle development. Look for foods that meet AAFCO standards for "growth" or "all life stages" to ensure they get the nutrients they need. Large breed puppies, in particular, need specialized formulas to prevent them from growing too quickly.

Establish a feeding schedule of three small meals a day rather than "free-feeding" throughout the day. This not only aids in digestion but also makes potty training much more predictable. Be mindful of treats; while they are great for training, they should not make up more than 10% of your puppy's daily caloric intake. Always provide fresh water and avoid common human food toxins like grapes, onions, and chocolate.
